1 Field of application
Lightweight horizontally perforated bricks are building materials for loadbearing and non-loadbearing brickwork. Lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels are not intended for loadbearing walls.
Lightweight horizontally perforated bricks and lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels are predominantly used for the construction of internal walls.
2 Concept
Lightweight horizontally perforated bricks and lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels are bricks which are moulded from clay, loam or clayey substances, with or without additives (air-entraining agents), and fired. Their apparent brick density shall not exceed 1,0 kg/dm3. The additives shall not have a long-term deleterious effect on the properties of the bricks.
3 Requirements
3.1 Shape
Lightweight horizontally perforated bricks and lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels shall have the shape of a unit defined by rectangles. Grooves or similar may be provided on the stretcher faces to improve plaster adhesion. Depressions may be made in the bed faces to accommodate reinforcements.
3.2 Types of brick
3.2.1 Lightweight horizontally perforated bricks are bricks in which the perforations run parallel to the bed face. They may be made with small perforations (cross section of an individual hole not exceeding 6 cm2) which accept mortar either entirely or in the marginal zone or with large perforations (cross section of an individual hole exceeding 6 cm2) (see table 1). The brick shall never be higher than it is wide.
3.2.2 Lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels are bricks in which the perforations run parallel to the bed face. The pattern of perforation is not specified. The height of the bricks shall exceed the thickness.
3.3 Perforations and webs
3.3.1 Perforations and webs shall conform to table 1. The webs shall be distributed over the cross-sectional area in such a way that the side walls and vertically running webs are stiffened by horizontally running webs or walls (see figures 1 and 3). They may be of any cross-sectional shape; rectangular perforations shall be preferred.

3.2.2
The entire cross section of lightweight horizontally perforated bricks which are intended to accept mortar on the joint faces shall have small perforations (individual cross section not exceeding 6 cm²), there shall, however, at least be double external walls separated by small perforations and a minimum web thickness of 10 mm (see figure 2).
The external walls of lightweight horizontally perforated bricks which are not intended to accept mortar in the joint faces shall be not less than 15 mm thick (see figure 3).
The distance between the vertical webs and walls shall not exceed 65 mm, the distance between the horizontal webs and walls shall not exceed 100 mm. The minimum web thickness shall be 10 mm.
3.3.3
The type and pattern of the perforations in lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels is not specified. The external walls shall be not less than 9 mm, the webs not less than 7 mm thick (see figure 4).

3.4.3
Lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels (see figure 4) shall be straight and flat. The tolerance on straightness shall be 1,5 % of the length in the longitudinal direction and 3 % of the height in the transverse direction (see figure 5).

Example of designation:
Designation of a lightweight horizontally perforated brick panel (LLp) of apparent brick density class 0,6, length l = 495 mm, height h = 320 mm and thickness s = 60 mm:
Brick DIN 105 — LLp 0,6 — 495 × 320 × 60
5 Marking
All bricks shall be provided with a works mark (manufacturer's mark) and the symbol identifying the brick type (LLz or LLp).
Lightweight horizontally perforated bricks ready for dispatch shall additionally be marked on one stretcher face with a colour coding stripe not less than 20 mm in width, indicating the compressive strength class (see table 8) and details of their apparent brick density class.
An indication of the apparent density class is considered adequate for lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels.
It shall be deemed sufficient if one brick is marked for up to 200 lightweight horizontally perforated bricks not less than 10 DF and for up to 50 lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels.

6 Testing
If bricks are packaged, it shall be deemed sufficient if the packaging or an attached label gives the works mark, brick type, apparent brick density class and compressive strength class (for lightweight horizontally perforated bricks).
6.1 Shape, dimensions, perforation
In accordance with DIN 105 Part 1.
A measuring rule or a gauge board with a millimetre scale is sufficient for measuring the length of lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels with dimensions exceeding 495 mm.
The deflection shall also be determined for lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels as illustrated in figure 5. In this determination, the panel shall be pressed on a longitudinal face or width against a smooth surface. Deviations from straightness shall be determined using a measuring wedge and stated to the nearest whole millimetre.
6.2 Apparent brick density
In accordance with DIN 105 Part 1.
6.3 Compressive strength
In accordance with DIN 105 Part 1.
Lightweight horizontally perforated bricks, including standard format bricks, shall be tested as whole bricks. Form factors shall not be applied.
6.4 Bending strength
The bending strength of lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels shall be determined on 5 air-dried samples.
Each panel shall be tested lying flat. The panel shall be placed on two supports so that it can move and stressed in the middle parallel to the supports by means of a 20 mm wide mandrel. The distance between supports shall equal the length of the panel minus 50 mm. The load shall be increased steadily at a rate of approximately 10 N per second.
6.5 Expansive particles and water-soluble salts
In accordance with DIN 105 Part 1.
7 Inspection
7.1 General
See DIN 105 Part 1.
7.2 Internal control
In accordance with DIN 105 Part 1.
7.3 Third party inspection
In accordance with DIN 105 Part 1.
The inspection of lightweight horizontally perforated brick panels shall include the bending strength test instead of the compressive strength test and the determination of deflection.
