Summary:
This standard specifies the method for determining the bulk density of metal powders using a vibrating funnel. This method is applicable to metal powders that cannot flow freely through the 5mm hole funnel in the funnel method. This standard is not applicable to metal powders that are easily broken during vibration, such as agglomerated particles, fibrous and needle-shaped powders. The method for determining the bulk density of powders containing such particles is specified in GB/T 5060. Some standard content:
GB/T5061—1998
This standard is a revision of GB/T5061-1985 "Determination of bulk density of metal powders Part 3: Vibration coagulation method". This standard adds Article 5.3: "According to the flow of powder, the amplitude of the vibrator should be properly adjusted in advance to prevent the powder from flowing into the cylindrical cup in piles". In the process of implementing GB/T5061-1985, it was found that some powders would flow into the cylindrical cup in piles when the amplitude of the vibrating device was adjusted too large, causing the measured value of the bulk density to be too high. There are three methods for determining the bulk density of powders with different properties. Under the general title of "Determination of bulk density of metal powders", there are three corresponding standards:
Part 1 (i.e. GB/T1479): Funnel method Part 2 (i.e. GB/T5060): Scott volumetric method Part 3 (i.e. GB/T5061): Vibrating funnel method This standard replaces GB/T5061--1985 from the date of implementation. This standard is proposed by the State Bureau of Nonferrous Metals Industry. This standard is owned by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Standard Metrology and Quality Research Institute. This standard is drafted by the Iron and Steel Research Institute of the State Bureau of Metallurgical Industry. The main drafters of this standard are: Chen Mulan, Li Zhongquan, and Li Yulian. 236

Metallic powders- Determination of apparent density---Part 3: Oscillating funnel methodGB/T5061..1998
Replaces GB/T5061--1985
This standard specifies the method for determining the apparent density of metallic powders by oscillating funnel. This method is applicable to metallic powders that cannot flow freely through the funnel with an aperture of 5 mm in the funnel method.
This standard is not applicable to metallic powders that are easily broken during vibration, such as agglomerated particles, fibrous and needle-shaped powders. The method for determining the apparent density of powders containing such particles is specified in GB/T5060. 2 Principle
Powder is loaded into a funnel with a vibrating device and vibrated under certain conditions. With the help of vibration, the powder falls freely from the funnel at a certain height and fills a cylindrical cup of known volume in a loose state. The loose density of the powder is expressed by the mass of the loose powder per unit volume. 3 Test device
3.1 Funnel
The diameter of the small hole is 7.5mm+2mm (see Figure 1). 3.2 Vibrator
The power frequency is 50Hz, the funnel vibrates horizontally at a frequency of 100Hz, and the amplitude is 100μm±15um (see Figure 2). 3.3 Cylindrical cup
The volume is 25cm2±0.05cm2 and the inner diameter is 30mm±1mm. 3.4 Cup holder
It is used to support the cylindrical cup. During operation, the cup holder and the vibration device must not touch each other, otherwise it will affect the results. 3.5 Production of funnel and cylindrical cup
Cylindrical cup and funnel should be made of non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant metal materials, and have a certain wall thickness and hardness to prevent deformation and excessive wear. Brass is generally used. The inner surface processing accuracy of cylindrical cup and funnel should reach %. 4 Sampling
GB/T 5061 - 1998
4.1 Take at least 100cm volume of each sample and test it in 3 parts. 4.2 Usually, metal powders are tested in the collected state. In some cases, the powder can be dried. However, if the powder is easily oxidized, the drying should be carried out under vacuum or inert atmosphere. If the powder contains volatile substances, drying is not allowed. 5 Steps
5.1 Use the positioning block to adjust the distance between the cylindrical cup and the funnel to 25mm and align it to the center. 5.2 Block the small hole of the funnel with your finger, and then put the test powder into the funnel. 5.3 Depending on the flow of the powder, pre-adjust the amplitude of the vibrator appropriately to prevent the powder from flowing into the cylindrical cup in piles. 5.4 Start the vibration device and release your fingers to allow the powder to flow into the cup until the powder overflows. 5.5 Use a non-magnetic and non-static ruler to scrape the powder flat. During the operation, do not compress or bring out the powder, and do not vibrate the cylindrical cup. 5.6 After the powder is scraped flat, tap the cup wall to make it slightly firm to prevent the powder from spilling out of the cup when moving. Then, clean the powder on the outer wall of the cylindrical cup and make sure it is not stained with powder. 5.7 Weigh the mass of the powder in the cup to an accuracy of 0.05g. 6
Result expression
The bulk density is calculated by the following formula:
Where: Pm—bulk density of powder measured by the vibration funnel method, g/cm; m.-powder mass·g
.Cylinder cup volume, cm\.
Take the arithmetic mean of the three measurement results and report the final result. The reported data is rounded to 0.01 g/cm2. When the difference between the three measurement results exceeds 1% of the average value, the highest and lowest values shall be reported. 7 Test report
The test report shall include the following contents:
a) This standard number:
b) Necessary instructions for identifying the sample;
c) Sample treatment. If the sample is dried, the drying process shall be noted; d) Test results:
e) Operations not specified in this standard;
f) Any conditions that may affect the results.
